How to Make a Green Smoothie
Smoothies are nutritious drinks made by combining fruits, vegetables and various other ingredients in a blender. Green smoothies have become especially popular and for good reason. The nutrients in the leafy vegetables are much more available for your body to use after the plant cell walls have been broken open by the action of the blender.
The raw greens used in smoothies have more vitamin C and folate than cooked greens, but, because they are raw, it is important to rinse the greens well and only use greens grown away from any wastewater or livestock.
Green Smoothie Recipe, Tips
- To make a delicious and nutritious green smoothie begin by rinsing the leaves well.
- For this smoothie we are using longevity spinach. It’s a very popular green in much of Asia and grows well in the summer heat.
- To make a smoothie for 3 people; cut the leaves into large pieces and pack two cups with the leaves. You can adjust this amount depending on the type of leaves used. Some have stronger flavors than others.
- Pour 2 cups of cold orange juice into the blender, add the greens and blend well.
- You may choose another flavored juice or another liquid such as milk or almond milk, or even plain water.
- Next, add 2 bananas and again blend well. The bananas will thicken the smoothie.
- Just these ingredients alone make for a great tasting smoothie. However, you may want to add other ingredients to boost the nutrients even more and add a different flavor.
- Try adding other fruit such as berries, pineapple or mango or some yogurt. Or whatever else sounds good to you.
- Smoothies always taste best when they are very cold. If you have ice available adding a cup of ice is a good idea.
Smoothies are a fast and easy way to get a lot of nutrition into a drink. And a favorite of most kids.
